HarmonyOS Next, the latest version of the company’s proprietary operating system, was announced in January 2024 and marks a dramatic departure from previous Android-compatible versions.
Huawei is actively collaborating with application developers to help them create versions adapted to HarmonyOS. The company is also developing a new generation of programmers specializing in this platform.
A major milestone in the development of the system was the American sanctions in 2019 that banned Huawei from using Android. This forced the company to accelerate the development of its own operating system, and within four months the first version of HarmonyOS was released.
Huawei is now striving for full autonomy in chips, operating systems and applications.
Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong announced a major HarmonyOS update for fall 2024 that will take Huawei devices to the next level and promise a 30% performance increase.
The transition to HarmonyOS Next will begin with a developer beta in Q2 2024, followed by a consumer release in Q4.
