Apple announced a major update to its iPhone repair process this Thursday (11). It now allows the mobile phone to be repaired with original used parts and retain all its functions. The new feature will go into effect next fall in the US, starting in September.
During smartphone repair, Apple checks whether a component is genuine and performs the matching process. If you are using a new or non-original part, the phone starts displaying notifications stating that it is not possible to verify the resource and may not fully work in some cases, such as Touch ID and Face ID sensors.
With the policy change, These notifications for used parts should no longer appear. Additionally, customers and independent repair shops will no longer be required to provide the device serial number when ordering most parts available in the Self-Service Repair Shop catalogue.
Parts that did not require configuration, such as volume buttons, were already available from used iPhones. update now includes batteries, monitors and cameras. According to Apple, future versions of the handset will support biometric sensors used to fit the bill.
Blocking stolen iPhone parts
Permission to repair iPhone with used original parts, which will be issued by the brand in the near future, may facilitate the use of components recovered from stolen or stolen mobile phones in repairs. However, the Cupertino giant has a plan to prevent this situation.
For this purpose, the company will expand the activation lock feature, which makes it difficult to use parts removed from stolen or lost iPhones. “If a device under repair detects that a supported part has been retrieved from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, the calibration capabilities of this part will be restricted”, explained the manufacturer.
Apple did not specify which models the new repair parts policy would cover, but TechCrunch, The measure will only apply to the iPhone 15 seriesFirst.
