According to Bloomberg, a small portion (about 5%) of the millions of images used to train Firefly came from competing tool Midjourney. While Adobe claims that all training data goes through a “rigorous moderation process,” concerns remain, particularly because the sources of Midjourney data remain unknown. Some have suggested that Midjourney uses unlicensed images from the internet.
This discovery contradicts Adobe’s previous statements. When launching Firefly, Adobe emphasized that it used licensed data, positioning it as an “ethical” alternative to competitors. This move was intended to reassure corporate customers and address concerns about copyright infringement. However, the inclusion of potentially unlicensed images from Midjourney undermines this strategy.
