Researchers from MISIS University and the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymphology have presented an improved nanofiber for creating dressings that will help patients avoid post-operative problems and cope with chronic wounds. They combined two technologies: adding silver ions to the material and using antimicrobial compounds. These methods were previously believed to be incompatible, NUST MISIS reported.

The improved nanofibers have a strong antibacterial effect and interact well with the body. Thanks to new technology, these dressings may be more effective than others. Anton Manakhov, senior researcher “Inorganic Nanomaterials” at NUST MISIS Research Center, explained that they not only fight bacteria but also promote tissue restoration.

Researchers found that the optimal time to apply silver ions to increase antibacterial activity is 2.5 minutes. Prolonged processing may reduce the effectiveness of the material. They plan to conduct additional tests in the future to test the effectiveness of nanofibers in treating various infections and wounds.
