Insider Mishaal Rahman said that Google is currently testing a new Device Diagnostics tool, “Device Diagnostics Tool”. The app not only gives a summary of the device’s remaining space and memory usage, but also shows the actual status of the memory chip.
This feature will use the new storage lifespan API in Android 15 and will show “the remaining life of the internal storage device as an integer percentage.” So the 90 indicator means that the smartphone storage has 90% of its lifespan remaining.
Additionally, “Device Diagnostics” will improve the accuracy of battery life evaluation.
However, Rahman emphasizes that the patch description states that the improvement is “slightly different from the previous API available for idle maintenance.” But the catch is that idle maintenance is when Android trims unused blocks from the file system; This is useful for flash memory (UFS) chips.
However, excessive trimming of unused blocks can shorten the lifespan of storage chips, so it is necessary to check the health of the UFS chip and perform idle maintenance sparingly. Therefore, the new diagnostic tool will also evaluate the status of the UFS.
However, not all storage devices will work with the new Android 15 feature as there is no guarantee that all manufacturers will implement the updated Android API support. If Device Diagnostics is not supported, it will return response number 1 instead of storage data; This means the vehicle is not running.
