The new technology can produce approximately 70,000 Newtons of thrust using only 2 megawatts of laser power. This is possible thanks to the transmission of laser radiation through optical fibers covering the hull of the submarine.
Laser pulses not only create thrust, but also evaporate seawater, creating bubbles across the entire surface of the boat, significantly reducing water resistance. In theory, this would allow a submarine to travel faster than the speed of sound without giving away its position due to the mechanical vibrations typically associated with submarines.
This technology, called “underwater laser-induced plasma wave propulsion”, has wide application possibilities in the field of stealth submarine propulsion.
