Three video cameras were installed in Wrangel Bay for the first time to assess the impact of tourists on bowhead whales, the press service of the Foundation for Nature and People said. These mammals holiday in this place every year, but the increasing flow of tourists is causing concern among scientists. Over the 40 days of observations, more than 32 hours of video footage was captured to aid in the photographic identification and behavioral analysis of the whales.
Key findings include sightings of female whales with their calves. Scientists noted that three unique mother-calf pairs were detected in Wrangel Bay. In addition, drones recorded large numbers of killer whales frequently entering the bay, but all bowhead whales remained safe.
In parallel with scientific observations, experts organized trainings for tourists. For two months, scientists explained the rules for safely observing marine mammals and received feedback to improve the recommendations.
