There are two main types of tests used to diagnose RSV infection. These are rapid tests and RT-PCR tests. However, it is not possible to perform these tests at home.

Healthy adults and older children who have not had direct contact with an infected person generally do not need RSV testing, experts say. Patients usually develop symptoms within four to six days after contracting the virus.

But symptoms are similar in children and adults with RSV. It usually includes decreased appetite, runny nose, cough, sneezing, high fever and wheezing. True, they do not appear all at once, but at different stages of the disease. Sometimes signs that a child is infected with the virus include irritability, decreased activity, and difficulty breathing.
