Collector AppleDemoYT, who buys rare Apple prototypes, shared photos of demo samples of the Apple Watch and iPad with MacRumors.
They were combined on a single stand consisting of two devices. They are specifically designed to create a connection—for the only time in its life, the AW could connect to an iPad for setup.
Apple used a modified iPad mini 2 running iOS 8.2 paired with an Apple Watch running watchOS 1.0. Both devices are distributed in an individual housing.
The iPad removed several components, including the camera, microphone and speakers, and the stand housing served as the body of the tablet itself (also modified, of course). The Apple Watch was also heavily modified, with a groove along the sports diagnostic port for cable routing, a hole for attaching to the demo device, and equipped with a special strap that was traditional.
The watch and tablet were paired via cable. iPad simultaneously and sequentially communicates with and charges Apple Watch.
A custom Apple Watch Demo app was used to allow the Apple Watch to communicate with the iPad and provide a connection to the Apple server.
