For 4 years, my AirPods Pro of the very first generation frankly tired: The case turned from glossy to matte due to a scratch, chips appeared on its own headphones, the sound was no longer pleasing with depth, and besides, the left headphones constantly hissed and the microphone in it did not work.
So I gathered my courage and ordered the newest 2nd generation AirPods Pro with MagSafe USB-C charging case. I didn’t take risks and contact Avito, I found a more or less normal store with a good rating on Yandex Market and placed an order there.
And now, the courier is impatiently hovering at the door, I have a white box in my hands and I have literally a couple of minutes to check my new AirPods Pro for originality. How to do this to absolutely sure, and the courier was not held for attention?
Here’s how, all the ways:
1. Look at the box
You can’t tell right away whether it’s fake or original.
Now manufacturers of counterfeits have learned to quite accurately copy the design and materials of Apple equipment boxes. However, some nuances are still too much for them, for example font color on the back.
📍 In the original AirPods packaging, the letters are not black, but gray.. This has always been the case and this is the very first thing you should pay attention to.
📍The color of the cardboard from which the box is made must be white. Not gray, not dark white, but literally snow-white. I have seen various fake boxes from iPhones and Apple headphones, and they were all either gray or yellowish.
The Chinese also already know how to fake protective “tails”, which are seals. So their presence is not the main indicator of originality.
2. Opens the box, what is inside.
The lettering on the envelope is gray.
If you are satisfied with the initial inspection, remove the seals and remove the box lid. Underneath it should be a white envelope that says “Designed by Apple in California.”
📍 Colorful inscriptions should also be dark gray, not black. The envelope itself is white, match the color of the box.
📍 Under the envelope, in the preliminary “bath”, there is a snow-white case with headphones inside. Again, the color of the cardboard should be snow white, and it certainly shouldn’t be plastic. Only cardboard.
The “bath” for the headphones in the box should be cardboard.
Carefully roll up the white braided cable.
Underneath you can find a white braided USB-C cable neatly wrapped in cardboard strips and a set of spare silicone ear pads.
📍The cable must be neatly folded, the cardboard envelope with ear pads tightly closed, the silicone pads themselves must be white, without shades.
3. Consider cases and headphones
Keys and headphones must be the same color, without protruding.
Now that we’ve sorted out the box and accessories, let’s move on to our own headphones and charging case.
📍Take the keys in your hand – it should be perfectly smooth unexpectedly, without protruding seams. Open the lid – it should open quite easily, but when closed it should be held securely using magnets.
📍When opening and closing the lid should not make any extraneous soundsrattle without or dangle.
📍Pay attention to the LED on the case body: on the original AirPods Pro it is covered with transparent plastic. They didn’t do this on the fakes; the LED was simply recessed into the housing.
📍 Take out the headphones and inspect each item for the quality of the case. remember: no visible seams or protruding mesh there shouldn’t be.
📍 Pay attention to the “legs” of the original AirPods and AirPods Pro, where you can see the designations “L” for the left earphone and “R” for the right.
📍 Check the serial number. It is marked on the inside of the charging case lid and should fall with the number on the side of the box.
📍 If you have time, you can enter this serial number on the Apple authentication page and once again make sure of their originality.
4. Any suggestions left? There is another unofficial way to check
We wrote about this method in a separate article, but if you want to go and read, here’s what you need to do, in brief:
📍 Take a flashlight and shine a light on the top of the headphone case.
Fake: almost completely translucent, minimum observation.
Original: There are stripes and dark “spots”.
This method is quite reliable, at least it has never failed.
Authentication takes a minute, but saves nerves
I understand that when you take the desired box with new headphones from the courier, you only think about how soon you will open them, put them in your ears and turn on your favorite track. But don’t be lazy to spend a couple of minutes checking the originality of the product using this guide.
Considering the abundance of fake AirPods from all world brands on domestic marketplaces, the chance of getting a fake when purchasing online is very high. The rating of the store where you make a purchase is not at all a guarantee of the originality of the Apple equipment that the courier will bring to you.
A visual inspection takes very little time, but helps save your nerves and prevent you from being disappointed in the terrible sound of fakes.
Be carefull.
