Almost a year after the name change from Facebook* to Meta Platforms*, it became known that Mark Zuckerberg failed to attract the planned 500 thousand users to the metaverse. The company owner even lowered the bar and planned 280,000 accounts by the end of 2022, but only 200,000 enthusiasts have registered on the platform so far.

Zuckerberg failed to attract half of the expected users to the metaverse

Citing internal documents, The Wall Street Journal writes that such low rates are due to user dissatisfaction.

Customers are dissatisfied with their consumption experience at Horizon Worlds as it does not match internal expectations and brand marketing promises.

According to documents that include internal company analysis, most Horizon visitors typically don’t return to the app for a month after signing up, and the user base has been steadily declining since the spring.

By comparison, Meta*’s social networks and messengers (Facebook*, Instagram* and WhatsApp) together have an average of more than 3.5 billion monthly users, which is equivalent to almost half of the world’s population.

In theory, in the worlds of Horizon, users can visit various virtual spaces, shop, have fun, communicate or, if they wish, even work.

In practice, clients complain that the metaverse is not “populated” at all: and most of the time you won’t find anyone there.

In addition, 514 people surveyed (and this sample is considered very “valuable” by the company) complained that avatars do not look attractive and it is not as easy as we would like to find a certain world that they like from advertising. . .

According to internal statistics, only 9% of the worlds created by registered users and brands have been visited by 50 or more people. Usually the audience is much smaller and most of the spaces are completely empty.

The company intends to deal with the expressed problems, so, judging by the documents, it “froze” the project indefinitely: that is, it does not plan to release new features until it improves the current user experience.

* Meta and its members Facebook and Instagram are recognized extremist organizations whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation.
