Tim Cook turned 64 this year. He has led Apple since 2011. He has no plans to leave the company anytime soon, but his delivery is imminent. Therefore, Apple’s board of directors is looking for a successor, Bloomberg reports.

The first likely candidate is Apple COO Jeff Williams. If Cook leaves, he will lead the company.

But Williams turned 61 this year, making it unlikely that he will be a long-term CEO. Apple’s board of directors would like the new CEO to remain in office for at least 10 years, like Cook and Jobs.

Tim Cook’s most likely successor is John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. In recent years, his work has become increasingly visible within Apple and its features.

Ternus has been praised by Tim Cook, Eddie Cue and many other high-ranking Apple employees.

Tim really likes him because he can give a good presentation, he is very gentle, never says anything controversial in emails, and is very reserved with his knowledge. He has a lot of management qualities like Tim.

Christopher Stringer, a former industrial designer at Apple who worked for the company for 22 years, called Ternus a “reliable person” who “never failed in any position he was put in.”

Another reason is the age of Ternus. He is 49 years old. Tim Cook will lead Apple for “at least three more years,” so Ternus has a better chance of becoming the new CEO than other top executives.

Craig Federighi and Deirdre O’Brien are Cook’s “unlikely” successors. Phil Schiller and Dan Riccio will soon be leaving Apple. [Bloomberg]
