Previously, such a link was observed mainly in Asian populations. A new study analyzing data from more than 470,000 UK Biobank participants confirms the dangers of excessive salt intake for everyone.

The study found that those who regularly added salt to their food had a 41% higher risk of developing stomach cancer than those who rarely or never did so. These findings persisted even after controlling for factors such as age, socioeconomic status, and existing medical conditions.

However, shortcomings in the research are also acknowledged. Despite the sample size, the number of stomach cancer cases was insufficient to fully examine potential factors such as age, ethnicity, or H. pylori infection (another known risk factor for stomach cancer). Additionally, detailed nutritional data on salt intake from dietary sources was not available for all participants.
