Mammoth is a significant step up from Climeworks’ previous project, Orca, which opened in 2021 and was ten times smaller. The new facility has a modular design with space for 72 “collection containers” that act like giant air vacuum cleaners. Currently, 12 of them are in operation, and a few more are planned to open in the coming months.
At full capacity, Mammoth is expected to capture 36,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. In the future, this means around 8,000 petrol vehicles will be taken off the roads per year.
The captured carbon will then be transported underground to be permanently stored in natural rocks.
