Feadship launched the world’s first hydrogen yacht, Project 821. It is also the largest yacht ever launched in the Netherlands.

Project 821 is 119 meters long and 19 meters wide.

The main formulation of Project 821 is the ability to run on hydrogen. This is the lightest chemical element in the world: 1 m³ of liquid fuel weighs 70 kg, while 1 m³ of diesel fuel weighs about 800 kg.

But hydrogen can only be stored under pressure and at very low temperatures. For this yacht, a large tank was built below deck, holding 92 m³ (about 4 tons) at a temperature of −253 °C. In agreement, a conference requires 8-10 times more space than diesel fuel.

Project 821 cannot run on hydrogen all the time. But a yacht can switch to hydrogen when entering and leaving a harbor or when flowing through environmentally friendly areas. The maximum speed on hydrogen is 18 km/h.

The yacht can also operate silently on hydrogen while at rest. In this case, hydrogen will be used to operate lighting, heating and air conditioning systems.

The yacht has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two dressing rooms, two offices (each with a fireplace and a living room), a gym, a library, a dining room, a storage room and an elevator. In addition, there is a full promenade deck and a Jacuzzi in the bow. [New Atlas]
