This turns out to be paper mills (large organizations or small businesses) undermining the academic publishing process for financial gain. Wiley has withdrawn 11,300 articles from the Hindawi portfolio since 2022.
The situation is about the use of artificial intelligence to publish scientific articles. In his white paper, Unraveling Publication Manipulation at Scale: The Hindawi Way and Lessons in Academic Publishing, Wiley examines a variety of unethical practices by paper mills, such as using artificial intelligence to produce manuscripts and manipulate images, and the process of examining approaches to the same.
However, all this came out even though the publishing house did not dream of it so big. Moreover, the Hindawi case “suddenly” coincided with the departure of Wiley Chairman and CEO Brian Napak in October 2023. In the second quarter of fiscal 2024, revenues from scientific publications fell by $18 million, “primarily due to disruption of the Hindawi publishing house.”
