Psychologists from the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education found that people with square faces often get an incorrect assessment of their character from a photo. But after brief eye contact, personality perception improved regardless of face shape, according to a report from the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education.

The study was conducted in two stages: Participants first evaluated a person’s character from a photograph and then met him or her in person, without communicating with words or gestures. As a result of the first interview, people evaluated individual character traits and trust in the person differently. However, after a brief eye contact, their views became more positive. The only exception was stubbornness in people with round faces, which continued after the second evaluation.

People with square faces are often misunderstood in photos. But even brief contact changes this view, and strangers’ assessments become more similar to loved ones’ assessments. For example, people with square faces are often seen as insecure, needy, and prone to anxiety. After personal communication, these stereotypes usually disappear. The smallest differences in ratings before and after communication were observed between people with round and rectangular face types. Interestingly, the rectangular face created the largest changes in confidence ratings, while the triangular face created the smallest changes.
