Invented by former Google employee Samuel Matson, HoloBike uses an exercise bike equipped with a 27-inch 4K LCD screen covered with micro lenses. This setup creates a 3D effect that changes perspective as the cyclist moves, simulating real forward motion. The infrared camera with depth sensor enhances the effect by tracking body position and adjusting the perspective of the image.

The visuals are based on volumetric 3D scans of real roads and paths, not just CGI, providing a more “realistic feel”. Initially, five to six routes up to 40 km in length will be available, with more to follow over time. The bike’s electromagnetic resistance is adjusted to simulate hill climbs and descents and responds to virtual gear shifts using buttons on the handlebars.

The HoloBike is currently available on Kickstarter for $2,599, with a planned retail price of $2,999.
