Google has set a rule that all apps on the Play Store that allow you to create an account must allow you to delete the account. With this, the user only needs to access the application page in the Android store and click on a special link to delete the data.

However, Google gives developers until May 31 to comply with this determination. But recently Play Store started showing this feature for apps that already implemented it.

The rule aims to make it easier to delete account data in applications that allow the creation of an account for any purpose, without the need to reinstall the application.

Google was pressuring developers to comply with the new store rule. Apparently, May 31 will be the deadline and it will not be possible to extend it. However, the company does not seem to have publicly disclosed what kind of penalties the applications may face if they do not comply with the determination.

In any case, it is expected that applications already installed on devices will not allow the creation of new accounts. In the worst case, the Play Store may decide to ban the app from the store until the software makes the new functionality available.

The rule does not change for application developers who need to retain certain data for legitimate reasons. It is still necessary to disclose these data retention practices in accordance with each country’s data protection law.

In addition to the core benefit of allowing a user to delete their account from a service without needing to reinstall the app, the new store rule should also reduce the number of app installs outside of practical use of the app.
