Scientists have tested many different hypotheses about birds. One experiment showed that birds instinctively know where to fly, regardless of the distance to their homes. Even when the eggs of ducks living in England were transplanted to Finland, where the chicks hatched, they, like their relatives, flew south to spend the winter.

Experts still can’t say exactly how birds figure out which direction to fly. The most popular theory surrounding this is that they “scan” the Earth’s magnetic fields. Most likely, these areas help birds navigate during migration.
