Samsung has long been a leader in the foldable device market, but the company has lost ground recently due to increased competition and stagnation in Galaxy models.
A new report from Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung’s share of the global foldable smartphone market has fallen to 23%, while Huawei has emerged as the new leader with 35% in total shipments.
This comes as the overall foldable smartphone market grows by almost 50%.
Other big players in the market were Motorola with 11% and Honor with 12%. Both companies have seen significant growth throughout 2023, likely thanks to successful models such as the Razr+ and Magic V2 attracting consumer attention.
Last year’s Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 and Flip 5 were only minor upgrades over previous versions.
Samsung hasn’t made any significant changes to the hardware or software of its foldable devices, other than the Flip 5’s significantly larger external display.
At the same time, competitors like Motorola, Honor, Google, and Oppo/OnePlus were offering new improvements in hardware, software, and cameras that Samsung didn’t have.
