Spy x Family / Spy Family anime review. What might draw you to this piece?
The smash hit of the spring anime season was the film adaptation of Tatsuya Endo’s manga called The Spy Family. This is not the first work of this author, but it is the first that managed to find the affection of the mass public. Several of my good acquaintances and friends immediately recommended this title to me and I couldn’t pass it by. After waiting for all the episodes to be released, I started watching. And today I would like to share my impressions with you.

The story tells us about a spy whose code name is Dusk. He is sent to the country of Rest. She is the main political rival of her home country Vestalis. Dusk’s main task is to follow the leader of one of the Remaining groups, Donovan Desmond. He moves in the higher circles and rarely appears in public. The only available way for Twilight to get closer to her goal is to enroll her child in the school where Desmond’s children study. To do this, she adopts an orphaned girl from an orphanage and invites the girl to play a family together on mutually beneficial terms. And the main thing here is who these characters really are.

Speaking of characters. The protagonist, known as Dusk, is called Loyd Forger in this mission. He is a legendary and highly skilled spy. Nothing is known about him, and his professional skills are admired. The anime is full of moments where Loyd disguises himself, transforms into other people, such as Ethan Hunt, and cracks down on his enemies. But in his heart he only wants one thing, to make sure that the little children in this world don’t have to cry anymore. A good heart and tough skills, an excellent, if banal, combination.
Even though Dusk himself is a great character, the whole point of this title lies in the other two members of the family. To start with, an orphan girl named Anya. Everything would be fine if it weren’t for one of her interesting features. She is telepathic. He reads all the thoughts of her new parents, but she is afraid to tell anyone about her abilities. This leads to many funny situations as Anya hears what her new parents are thinking and reacts to it. The others do not understand what she is about and look at her in surprise.
Twilight’s wife is also not simple. Her name is Yor Brier. The people around her forced her to make such a contract with Loyd. They made fun of her because at 27 she was still single. But in reality, secretly, she is a hit man. And she loves what she does. Due to her secret profession, Yor is physically very strong, which she has shown more than once in ordinary life and surprised Loyd himself. However, despite her fondness, so to speak, Yor herself is just as kind as Loyd himself. Which is only good for her, as there are even more fun moments. It certainly sounds like fun. Good hitman.
Gender
As you might guess, The Spy Family is first and foremost a comedy. It’s full of funny moments built on apparently serious situations. A fake family made up of three very different people. Each of them has his own secret, which the others do not know. And Anya, who knows everything thanks to her abilities. It is she who is, perhaps, the main source of humor and tenderness. She brings this entire fake family together, discreetly solving potentially very serious problems. Yes, and with classmates at school, it also interestingly harmonizes. We can say that 80% of all anime rests on it.
setting and style
If we talk about setting, then we are shown the world of the 60-70s of the 20th century. Very elegant and atmospheric time. Spy gear, cars, costumes, and interior designs. All of this fills the visual of this anime with its own special charm. And the excellent drawing emphasizes everything. There are also clear parallels with our world. In the voice acting I saw, instead of country names, the terms “East” and “West” were used. Even once the name of a European capital shone.
But even if it’s just the translators’ quirks, I noticed one interesting thing. When I wrote the above paragraph, I dipped into the first few episodes of the anime to check my words. And what do you think? In the first episode, at the beginning, I noticed a very interesting detail. Looking at the cars, I noticed an old friend (screenshot below). He’s a fucking Seagull! GAZ-13 car. Soviet. My grandmother has a model of this car from Soviet times, so I easily recognized it. And how many such details are scattered throughout the anime, I can’t even imagine.

The Spy Family is a satirical spy comedy with action elements. All this seasoned with anime notes with all the consequences. However, the anime is remarkable, but thanks to the setting and the seriousness, it is not too flashy. I would even say that this title could be a good entry point into anime in general. Its main feature is the characters, their ridiculous attempts to keep everything a secret, and the espionage atmosphere of the mid-20th century. There are many references here, both to the real world and to various spy franchises. Mission Impossible or Agent 007, for example. Separately, it is possible to notice the opening. He… well, you’ll see.
Sometimes the series has little problems with logic. But it is more likely that you simply do not notice them, since all the members of this unusual family will monopolize all your attention. Unfortunately, according to modern fashion trends, the plot of the series was left unfinished, and we are waiting for the second season. However, it will be released in the fall, so the wait is not long. Or you can go and read the manga. In any case, the family of spies deserves to spend 1 or 2 nights on it, because it will bring positive emotions to your head.
