Apple has updated a patent for AirPods with a touch earbud case that was made public in September 2022.
It looks like Apple hasn’t given up on the idea because the company regularly updates patents for devices that haven’t yet appeared.
First, a touchscreen keyboard was invented that could be used to control music, interact with Siri, check the weather forecast, and receive messages from iMessage.
What has changed in the new patent is not specified. But the fact that it was updated indicates that Apple has not abandoned this idea.
The described capabilities turn AirPods into a modern iPad nano. We might see premium AirPods Ultra with a touchscreen in the future.
But as Apple knows, you can never be sure of this, because the company regularly creates many patents that remain unrealized. [9to5Mac]
