These mutations are critical in gliomas, a common and aggressive type of brain cancer with a low survival rate. The study analyzed more than 240 tissue biopsies from glioma patients, rapidly identifying IDH mutations within two minutes. This rapid assessment allows surgeons to make informed decisions during surgery and can potentially improve patient outcomes by tailoring treatment to the molecular characteristics of the tumor.

Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, senior author and chief of neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic, emphasizes the platform’s potential for local treatment of patients during surgery. This approach can increase the effectiveness of subsequent chemotherapy and radiation therapy by targeting cancer before it spreads.

Researchers achieved 100 percent accuracy in diagnosing IDH mutations and are now expanding their research to identify other tumor signatures.
