Today, the Disney+ streaming service launched a long-awaited project in the Star Wars universe – the Acolyte series.

It promised to be our new addition to the franchise, offering a unique take on the Rise of the Republic era that had never been seen before.

However, despite its sizable budget and ambitious intentions, Revolution falls short of expectations, leaving fans feeling like they’re watching yet another attempt to squeeze the last drops of magic out of the Star Wars universe.

But first things first. We watched the above episodes and are ready to share our impressions.

Short description

Boring characters and dialogues. How about something new in the world of Star Wars?
The director and screenwriter failed. What are you getting paid for?

An intriguing start, something you’ve never seen before

What is the series about?: The movie tells a story that takes place one hundred years before the events of Episode I – The Phantom Menace, during the Rise of the Republic. The plot centers on two twin sisters, Osha and May Anisei.

Separated as children after family tragedies, the sisters follow different paths: Osha becomes a mechanic and tries to forget her past, while May, pondering a desire for revenge, chooses the dark side of the Force.

🚨Small spoiler🚨

The series begins with an intriguing duel on the planet Ueda. The heroine enters a noisy bar filled with a variety of aliens and dregs of society. The atmosphere is immediately reminiscent of the iconic tavern from A New Hope, but with modern visuals and the spirit of the Rise of the Republic era. There is tension in the air and the audience discovers that something is about to happen. And this feeling is justified.

A disguised figure, we later learn that this is one of the sisters, meeting with the Jedi Master fighter Indaru.

🚨End of spoiler🚨

The tension builds into a perfectly choreographed combat situation. The young girl has knowledge of martial arts and the skill of throwing daggers, which allows for a subtle battle in a unique style. In turn, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jedi Master Indara also does a brilliant job in her role. Her on-screen actions remind viewers of her character from The Matrix. Grace, showiness and knowledge of affairs are all the subtleties of her character. penetration and charisma.

The end result is something truly original and fresh in the Star Wars universe. The fight scenes in The Acolyte are achieved using various martial arts such as kung fu, kenjutsu and kickboxing. These elements give the rooms a special style and make them more spectacular and intriguing. Unlike traditional lightsaber combat, which focuses on powerful strikes and blocks, the fight scenes in Acolyte rely on flexibility, speed and precision of movement.

But, unfortunately, this the only one plus the game at the moment. Everything else only causes boredom and bewilderment. It would be that, besides an experienced fight scene director, there were only amateurs on the set.

Therefore, I had several questions for the creators.

Boring characters and dialogues. How about something new in the world of Star Wars?

After a thrilling opening scene, the script quickly builds momentum. The dialogue is consistently repetitive and superficial, not allowing the audience to delve deeper into the story or empathize with the characters. The storylines remain underdeveloped, and many moments are simply unfinished.

Despite a star-studded cast including Amandla Stenberg and Lee Joon-jae (hero of the sensational Squid Game), the characters remain monotonous and I’m not arousing enough interest. Their motives and actions are comparatively economical and unconvincing. For example, May, as the main antagonist, is not presented with enough horror or sympathy, and her motivations remain undeveloped. Objectively, she falls short of the other main cult villains of the universe.

Moreover, the world itself seems monotonously familiar. “Acolyte” depends on increased repetition of familiar Star Wars elements.

Space taverns, Jedi temples, coastal cliffs and starship interiors are the most hackneyed and do not bring anything new. This creates a feeling of stagnation and the emergence of evolution in the universe.

We have seen dozens of times in all these places. Indicate some new elements, especially as funds allow! But, despite the solid budget $180 million (more so than most major blockbusters!), the series feels staged and lifeless. CGI effects are often sporadic and inexpressive, and the decorations are simply boring, although they look expensive. Everything you see looks too familiar to be truly exciting.

It’s simple here not cultural and epic scale! The Acolyte takes place a century before the fall of the Republic, a prequel of sorts to George Lucas’s prequels. Here it was possible to show something completely new – something we had never seen anywhere before. Time period of work!

Probably true Star Wars fans will be delighted, but those who simply love the approach will find the approach too sterile.

The director and screenwriter failed. What are you getting paid for?

In addition to the lifeless world, we also got a stillborn scenario.

The opening scene is high paced and tense, contrasting with the slow and monotonous pace of the rest of the game. For example, there are interesting spaceships and drones, but no dogfights or chases!

Tragic moments that should evoke strong emotions turn out to be underdeveloped and ineffective.

The storylines involving the two sisters are an interesting exploration of the duality of the light and dark sides of the Force. But their internal conflict and struggle with the past, although they influence their characters, are essentially not fully revealed.

Much of the screen time is devoted to exposition and flashbacks, which, while providing context, don’t move the plot forward. This creates a feeling of stagnation and progress.

Disappointing conclusions

As a result, “Acolyte” is a project with obvious ambitions, but unsuccessful implementation. Despite a few quality elements such as action scenes and interesting plot premises, the series as a whole is driven by weak, boring dialogue, mediocre scene-setting, and a development of novelty. Perhaps the next episodes will correct these problems.

Fans of the Star Wars series are certainly worth a look (if only for the new lightsaber colors (!)) to make up their minds, but we shouldn’t expect much from it at the moment.
