I have always been a devoted supporter of Apple technology and its operating systems.

I like the company’s approach, attention to design and detail. I use almost all the standard applications every day and, of course, like any Apple fan, I was looking forward to the WWDC presentation where we introduced new operating systems.

Topic: Here’s everything Apple showed at WWDC 2024.

Naturally, the new iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence services attracted more attention. Unfortunately, they left a negative impression on me.

Terrible new icons

In iOS 18 you can now change the color of icons. This function was added for Android masochists who have long wanted to use an iPhone. I have no other explanation.

You can talk as much as you like about different tastes, but it looks terrible. iOS has always paid attention to detail, with designers’ work visible above each icon.

What do we have in iOS 18? Identical icons that look like they took the cheapest icon pack from Google Play and ported it to iOS.

And the most interesting thing is that in reality two people will use this, the rest will not even notice the new feature.

Icons can be moved, but why?

I seriously don’t understand why in iOS 18 you can move icons any way you want. It’s probably good that this can be done in principle. But is this really necessary? Seriously, is there anyone who gave up their iPhone because they couldn’t move the icon to the right corner?

iOS has often been criticized for not allowing icons to move smoothly. But even among jailbreak users, those who did this were a minority.

As with the colored icons, I doubt anyone will use this. As usual, they will play with the reduction for the first time, and then forget about it.

iOS has finally caught up with Android

Control Center has always been a worthy contender for Apple. It appeared in iOS 7, then changed several times, and in iOS 11 windows adopted a design that changed slightly in iOS 18.

Editing elements in a control project always occurs through Settings. In iOS 18 you can now do this directly in the curtain. Convenient, but why did we wait 7 years for this feature?

The same applies to the flashlight icons and camera on the lock screen. They can finally be changed. But why only now? Probably these problems were more important.

Apple Intelligence is the biggest scam of the year

The Apple Intelligence demo showed impressive results, not yet declared on the list of harmful devices.

And if everything is clear with Mac and iPad (you need an M1 processor or newer), then I can’t explain the limitation in the form of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Is the iPhone 14 Pro Max, 15 and 15 Plus with the A16 Bionic processor already a thing of the past? I doubt. My iPhone 14 Pro Max works great, no lag at all. I am sure that it would have supported Apple Intelligence, but Apple decided otherwise, so most iPhone owners cannot try the new AI functions.

I can argue that the A17 Pro chip has a 3nm architecture and its neural engine supports 35 trillion operations per second. The A16 Bionic is made on a 5nm process technology, and its Neural Engine supports only 17 trillion operations per second.

But there is the M1 processor, which is also made using a 5 nm process technology and has a Neural Engine with support for a “pathetic” 11 trillion operations per second. That is, the Neural Engine in the M1 is weaker on paper than in the A16 Bionic, but the M1 is compatible with Apple Intelligence.

The most interesting thing is that for the most part, hardware has nothing to do with it at all, because many Apple Intelligence operations are carried out in the cloud. That is, the iPhone only needs to send a request and receive a response. I think the iPhone 14 Pro has still learned to handle this.

In fact, this is a real example of artificial restrictions aimed at encouraging users to switch to new iPhones.

Apple Lost Race II

The fact that Apple Intelligence is largely powered by ChatGPT proves that Apple has won the AI race.

The company had to urgently look for a partner because it itself could not create AI for all the new functions in iOS 18.

Why did it happen? I don’t know, but this is a very serious problem. AI is already a major leader, and its role in our lives will only grow.

Apple now puts itself in a dependent position because some of its functions work only thanks to OpenAI. According to rumors, Apple is developing its own language model and chatbot. But it is unknown when they will be presented. And there are no guarantees that Apple’s solution will appear at least at the ChatGPT level.

Apple has no new ideas

This is exactly the thought I had after the release of iOS 18. If the controversial update of the main screen and the removal of the control center, except for the new Photo application, there is nothing more interesting in the system.

But if Apple really doesn’t know how to improve the home screen, then it’s better not to touch it at all than to spoil it in this way.

Maybe Apple decided that they have nothing to improve in iOS 18? But this is also not true.

Notifications are still not displayed on the Apple Watch when the iPhone is connected to CarPlay, the camera settings are not in the camera, the video jerks when switching the camera. And I can find such disadvantages for another separate post.

There are a lot of things that need to be changed in iOS. But Apple is more interested in coloring the icons.
