For the first time, scientists have systematically examined the effectiveness of different tree species against viruses. Pine and spruce showed excellent results in the fight against coronaviruses, significantly reducing their activity within 10-15 minutes. It turns out that oak is effective against another type of virus, enterovirus.

Studies have shown that the antiviral properties of wood depend on its chemical composition, especially the content of resin acids, terpenes and phenolic compounds. At the same time, heat treatment and the addition of plastic to wood-polymer composites reduce efficiency.

The discovery by Finnish scientists will allow the use of natural wood to reduce the spread of viruses in public places. Research continues – scientists plan to find the most effective components of wood and develop safe and environmentally friendly anti-virus coatings based on them.
