OpenAI now has a new internal custodian in search of greater protection for its star project: AI through GPT-4o and its consequences in ChatGPT.
The former head of the National Security Agency, retired General Paul Nakasone, will join the board of directors of OpenAI, the AI company announced on Thursday, June 13. He will also serve on the board’s safety and security subcommittee.
He Retired US Army General Paul M. Nakasone is a leading expert in the field of cybersecurity, technological advancement and global cyber defense. During his career as an Army officer, he was instrumental in the creation of U.S. Cyber Command. He was USCYBERCOM’s longest-serving leader and also led the National Security Agency, where he was responsible for protecting America’s digital infrastructure and developing the nation’s cyber defense capabilities. He has held command and staff positions at all levels of the U.S. Army, as well as assignments with elite cyber units in the United States, Republic of Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
General Nakasone shared his thoughts on joining the Council, stating: “OpenAI’s commitment to its mission is closely aligned with my own values and experience in public service. “I look forward to contributing to OpenAI’s efforts to make artificial intelligence safe and useful for people around the world.”
Nakasone’s ideas will also contribute to OpenAI’s efforts to better understand how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity by quickly detecting and responding to cybersecurity threats.

As a first priority, Nakasone will join Safety and Security Committee Council, which is responsible for making recommendations to the entire Council on critical safety and security decisions for all OpenAI projects and operations.
