Augmented reality (AR), unlike virtual reality, superimposes digital objects on top of the real world. AR technology has a wide range of applications, including education, training, commerce, marketing and navigation. Typically, AR glasses consist of two main components: a projector that creates the image and an optical system that displays it to the user’s eyes.

A compact and energy-efficient backlight system is important to ensure comfortable use and high image quality. Scientists propose using a light guide plate to efficiently deliver light to an LCoS display.

The developed system exhibits excellent illumination uniformity and high contrast, as well as good color rendition. The researchers believe their development will enable the creation of a new generation of thinner and more stylish AR glasses.
