The lions’ perilous journey was documented by researchers led by Alexander Braczkowski of Griffith University. Using an H20T thermal imaging camera and a DJI Matrice 300 drone, the team captured the lions’ successful 1.5-kilometer swim attempt, the longest documented water journey for African lions. Previous records indicated swims not exceeding 100 metres.
Braczkowski suggests that lions crossing the channel is due to an imbalance in the sex ratio and the need to find new territory and mates. The study calls for further investigation of the impact of anthropogenic pressure on the habitat and behavior of big cats.
