The group A streptococcus (GAS) bacteria that causes STSS usually causes mild infections such as pharyngitis in children. But some strains can cause serious symptoms such as limb pain, swelling, fever, decrease in blood pressure, progressive necrosis, difficulty breathing, organ failure, and death, usually within 48 hours. People over 50 are particularly vulnerable.
The increase in cases came after the restrictions imposed during Covid were eased. At the current infection rate, Japan could see up to 2,500 cases this year, with a mortality rate of 30%.
