The study, published in the journal Nature, created the most detailed 3D map of precancerous pancreatic lesions in humans to date. This will help diagnose pancreatic cancer (PDAC) and other types of pancreatic cancer at an early stage in the future.

Previously, it was difficult to diagnose pancreatic cancer at an early stage because the cells were small. The new technique uses machine learning to analyze images of thin sections of pancreatic tissue and create 3D digital models of them.

The study showed the existence of interconnected networks of precancerous foci even in healthy areas of the pancreas. Scientists also discovered that these networks consist of genetically distinct foci caused by different gene mutations.

The use of 3D genomic profiling at an early stage will enable the development of new treatments for pancreatic cancer.
