Every iPhone and iPad comes pre-installed with the tolerable, if basic, video editor iMovie. It is updated at best once a year, but they stubbornly do not remove it. It’s easy to use, it doesn’t create any watermarks, it renders quickly and, most importantly, it doesn’t cost anything – there are no paid subscriptions.

iMovie for iOS, however, still has a very strange problem: it does not support exporting videos in portrait orientation. That is, the formats of available videos, such as “shorts” and “Tiktoks”, fly by. After rendering, they turn into landscape ones, with black stripes on the sides. They can then be trimmed Photobut then the quality and resolution increases.

The solution is still There is. It’s so simple that it’s even funny to write about it. However, on Reddit I regularly see surprised comments from those who find this “life hack” lying right on the surface.

How to Edit a YouTube Shorts or TikTok Video in iMovie on iPhone

1. Opens Photo on iPhone

2. Select a video shot in portrait orientation (vertical)

3. Click the edit button in the bottom panel

4. Select the bottom tab “Crop”

5. In the upper right corner of the remote control, click on the rotation button (square with an arrow)

6. Click ready in the upper right corner.

All. The video became portrait without loss of quality. Now open iMovie in iOS and… edit it like this, rotated.

Then export the result and carry out the same operations in Photo. But now we turn it so that return portrait orientation. Done, the video can be uploaded to vertical video services.

The solution is suitable for “purists” who do not want to install video editors from paid App Stores or shareware with a lot of advertising just for the sake of editing a portrait video from several fragments or cutting out an unnecessary part from its presentation. This is also a good option for black editing – before throwing the video further into more advanced programs.
