In an important industry precedent, the lawsuit that two voice actors file against an artificial intelligence startup they accuse of cloning their voices.

Paul Skye Lerman and Linnea Sage were hired Loveartificial intelligence company, provided voice clips in 2019 and 2020 of what they were told would be an internal investigation.

“On three occasions I was given written assurances about how and where it would be used for internal purposes only and not for frontline use,” Lerman said.

But two years later, Lerman said he was surprised to hear her voice in a YouTube video and then on a podcast he never recorded.

“My voice is being heard in places where I say things that I never said, in places that I didn’t agree to be a part of,” he said. “Now we’re in science fiction reality.”

Lovo has created an “AI voice cloning tool” that allows users to upload or record an audio sample that is converted into a custom voice clone.

Lerman and Sage stated that their voices are their livelihood and are now being usurped by artificial intelligence.

“I’m incredibly pessimistic about the future of voice acting,” Sage said. “So far this year I have lost 75% of the work that I usually did until now. And I hope it gets worse.”

“This is about protecting people whose voices may be used,” Lerman added. “And, unfortunately, this applies to anyone and everyone.”
