This event was recorded by ground cameras in Norway in 2022, and its source was not clear until now.

As it turned out, an aurora shower was recorded on Earth – an extremely rare event caused by the “calmness” of the sun. Scientists reported that the data they examined from ground cameras and satellites confirmed the “polar rain” hypothesis, which occurs when electrons from the solar corona pass through the Earth’s atmosphere over the polar region.

The researchers concluded that at a solar wind density of 0.5 cm3, the superthermal electron flow passes through the atmosphere. In addition to the fact that this is a very rare phenomenon, “polar rain”, as a rule, is not visible to the eye. with the naked eye, but only with special equipment. But the almost complete absence of the solar wind made it possible to record the flow of electrons from the solar corona using conventional cameras.
