NASA has awarded SpaceX an $843 million contract to build a spacecraft for the controlled descent of the ISS from Earth orbit in 2030.
The spacecraft will need to dock with the ISS and fine-tune several maneuvers necessary for the station’s controlled reentry over the South Pacific Ocean. Most likely, it will collapse after the operation is completed.
NASA and SpaceX have not released any details about the future spacecraft. Presumably, it will be created on the basis of the SpaceX Dragon, which is currently used to transport cargo and crew.
A controlled re-entry of the ISS on Earth is the best option for completing the project, according to a NASA study. English translation: “It was ruled out for technical reasons, gradual dismantling and return of components to Earth or their reuse in orbit.” It is impossible to transfer the ISS to a private company, since the components of Ms. belong to several countries.
