American toy store Toys “R” Us announced the creation of the first commercial made with artificial intelligence. The company relied on advertising agency Native Foreign and used Sora, OpenAI’s video rendering technology. However, this news disturbed many people.

The brand states on the company’s official website that it aims to “expand the boundaries of Sora.” The AI is capable of creating videos up to one minute long, with different characters and scenes created from text instructions.

“Imagine the excitement of young Charles Lazarus, founder of Toys ‘R’ Us, and his dreams for our iconic brand and beloved mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, in the early 1930s,” the chain’s announcement reads.

Director Joe Russo (‘Cine Pesadelo’) was one of the critics of the ad. “Toys ‘R’ Us released an AI ad and it’s complete bullshit,” he wrote on his Twitter account X, formerly known as Twitter. Writer and comedian Mike Drucker (‘Saturday Night Live’) also used the same social network to comment on the production.

“I love how this ad starts with the dream of a little kid who wants to share the imagination of ‘Toys ‘R’ Us’ with the world. And to show you how, we fired our artists and used a server farm to drain Lake Superior” Creating something like Stephen King’s nightmares for,’ he wrote.

Toys “R” Us claims that it used human labor in the production of the ad. Even when using Sora’s visual elements, such as actors and cameras, post-production and editing were handled by professionals.

“The branded film was created almost entirely with Sora, with some enhancing visual effects and original music composed by Aaron Marsh of the famous indie rock band Copeland,” the company said in a statement.

The video was co-produced by Kim Miller Olko, who serves as head of the company’s studios and executive producer, and Native Stranger’s director Nik Kleverov. “Charles Lazarus was a visionary ahead of his time, and we wanted to honor his legacy with a venue that uses the most advanced technology available,” Olko said in a statement.
