Forrest Norrod from AMD’s data centers department confirmed the seriousness of considering such large clusters for AI in a conversation with The Next Platform. The proposal underscores the growing demand for computing power in data centers driven by AI workloads, but such an order is unlikely to be fulfilled.

Frontier, currently the world’s most powerful supercomputer, runs on 37,888 GPUs. Scaling to 1.2 million GPUs presents numerous challenges, including latency, hardware failures, and significant power requirements on this or many other orders.

However, the potential for increased processing capabilities of artificial intelligence makes this goal “attractive”.
