Psychology professor Daniel Willingham, Why Students Don’t Like School notes that memory is the remnant of thought. That is, they remember what people thought about them and not necessarily what they were told.

When you write something in your own words on notes, you force your brain to formulate other people’s ideas differently. This mental effort increases the likelihood that all this information will later be moved into long-term memory.

Many scientific studies show that handwritten notes improve memorization of information, especially on various diagrams, arrows, drawings in the margins. Yes, typing on the keyboard is faster, but it won’t get your attention.
