Scientists noted in their study report published in the journal JAMA Network that the risk of inflammation and sudden death was reduced by an average of 25% due to the combination of fiber and plant protein. The Mediterranean diet includes nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables, olive oil and whole grains. However, animal protein, except for fish, is kept to a minimum.

Researchers examined quality of life and nutrition data of 25,315 women with an average age of 25. Between 1993 and 1996, scientists collected data on participants’ health status, including blood biomarkers, weight, lifestyle and many other parameters. Participants completed surveys every six months during the first year of the study and annually thereafter. An analysis of information collected between 2018 and 2023 was conducted using medical records to determine death statistics and causes.
