The earlier cancer is detected, the higher the chance of successful treatment. To do this, oncologists use tissue biopsies and imaging. A new liquid biopsy analysis method is easier and faster than traditional biopsy. It allows you to analyze fragments of tumor DNA circulating in the patient’s blood.

Using a blood test, doctors can determine the activity and spread of a tumor, allowing them to choose individual treatment. The researchers tested the method on patients receiving radiotherapy, including those with human papillomavirus (HPV), which also causes cancer.

The amount of HPV DNA fragments in the blood made it possible to track the development of tumors. In patients with head and neck cancer, high HPV DNA concentrations may be an early sign of disease relapse, which can be treated with immunotherapy.
