The slowing pace of hardware updates has forced the company to increasingly rely on paid services and subscriptions to sustain sales, which is one reason Apple has been so aggressive in protecting App Store revenue despite regulatory scrutiny.

While Apple Intelligence features will initially be free, the company plans to generate revenue from their use in the long term.

Perhaps an “Apple Intelligence+” service with additional functionality will emerge, similar to iCloud, for which users will pay monthly. Apple will also get a cut of the subscriptions from each AI partner it brings on board.

If these plans come to fruition, Apple could significantly reduce its reliance on hardware sales and begin to monetize artificial intelligence, a goal of many companies in Silicon Valley.
