Ozon and other Russian marketplaces, as well as sellers trading on domestic online platforms, have had difficulties delivering goods from China. The problems are related to mutual agreements.

As Ozon told Kommersant, in the spring of this year, many foreign banks, including Chinese ones, strengthened internal control over counterparties that ship products to Russia.

In June, when the European Union imposed sanctions against the Russian equivalent of SWIFT, the financial messaging system, the situation worsened. The EU also included measures to combat sanctions evasion in the 14th package of restrictions.

After that, sellers and buyers began to complain in thematic chats about the impossibility of ordering electronics or household appliances from China with delivery to the Russian Federation via Ozon Global.

Problems arise especially when trying to order expensive equipment from China.

In April, a new threshold for duty-free imports of goods into the Russian Federation of 200 euros or more came into force. Until now, goods worth 1,000 euros could be transported without import duties.

Due to all these changes, markets and sellers have refocused on offering cheaper products.

In this context, markets and their sellers are adjusting the supply of products from abroad and focusing on delivering cheaper products, says Ozon.

According to the newspaper’s source on the online sales market, this trend has been noticed not only by Ozon, but also by AliExpress and Wildberries. The latter told Kommersant that they had not noticed any significant changes in the offer of foreign products. At the same time, the company admits that sellers could focus on cheaper products.

UPDATE 15:20: The press service of Ozon reported that although the offer of some expensive products on Ozon Global has decreased, this is precisely due to the lowering of the duty-free import threshold. However, Ozon did not confirm any problems with the mutual agreements.

“Ozon Global delivers products from China and Turkey as usual: today more than 18 million products from foreign sellers are on display. Delivery times remain as usual: orders arrive on average within two weeks. There were also no problems with payment when purchasing Chinese products,” the company explained.
