This new program will analyze large amounts of data collected by spacecraft in the magnetosphere, a region of space highly influenced by Earth’s magnetic field, and identify telltale signatures of these mysterious objects.

Scientists hope the technique will provide more insight into magnetic reconnection processes that can damage communications satellites and power grids.

Using machine learning could improve the ability to detect plasmoids, help master the basics of magnetic reconnection, and prepare for the potential consequences of disruption.
