According to data published in The Irish Medical Journal and reported to RTE, 229 cases of monkeypox were detected during this period, with one in 10 patients requiring hospital admission.
The study found that the average number of sexual partners among patients before infection was two every 21 days, but one person had sex with 75 partners, all of whom subsequently contracted monkeypox. The case group consisted mostly of people under the age of 35 (46%), with the oldest patient being 68. About two-thirds were Irish nationals and the rest were of Spanish origin.
The monkeypox epidemic in Ireland peaked in the summer of 2022 and declined sharply in the following months.
