Scientists from the Institute of Catalysis, Center for New Chemical Technologies, have developed new catalysts for the production of ethylene from natural gas. They used cobalt instead of expensive silver, making the process more economical. Ethylene is widely used in the chemical industry in the production of various substances such as ethyl alcohol, polyethylene and other polymers.

Russia, which has significant natural gas reserves, could use it as an alternative source for ethylene production. Scientists have developed catalytic systems that can efficiently convert acetylene, formed during the pyrolysis of methane, into ethylene using selective hydrogenation.

The researchers used Sibunit carbon material as a carrier of cobalt nanoparticles, which ensure high activity and stability of the catalyst. This material has an improved surface, mesoporous structure and high mechanical strength, which contribute to the efficient operation of the catalyst without undesirable side effects.

Such scientific developments open new horizons for industry by providing the basis for the creation of more efficient catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene and for increasing the production of ethylene from natural gas.
