According to him, in 2019 up to 80% of mineral water in stores did not correspond to the Essentuki and Slavyanovskaya brands, most often they were counterfeit.

The state then began to fight counterfeiting and launched water labeling in the “Honest Sign” system, and from December 1, 2021, manufacturers and importers were required to apply Data Matrix codes to bottled mineral water. In 2023, the transfer of information on the sale of water to the labeling system became mandatory for retail chains and stores.

That is why counterfeit mineral water will not be a phenomenon in retail chains by 2024. At the same time, this is still the case in off-chain retail.

“After Essentuki counterfeits began to disappear from retail chains’ shelves, Aqua Holding faced the problem of imitation products. Some companies have restructured and started launching their own brands, while others are trying to “live off old mirages,” says Wilk.
