During the study, participants completed tasks that required creativity, such as finding unusual uses for everyday objects.

Scientists have discovered that the creative process begins with the activation of the brain’s default mode network (DMN). This network is typically active when we’re not focused on a specific task, such as when daydreaming. DMN activity is then synchronized with other areas of the brain involved in complex problem solving and decision making.

The researchers were also able to show that certain parts of the DMN are specifically necessary for creative thinking.

Understanding how the DMN works could lead to new treatments for conditions in which the activity of this network is disrupted.
