Collect Cards: Store box app is disguised as a regular app with a simple interface for managing photos and videos, but once downloaded, it turns into a platform that offers pirated content from Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Apple TV+.

The app’s clever strategy was to detect the user’s location to display different interfaces. In regions like the US, it displayed an innocuous photo management interface, thus avoiding detection by the App Store review team. In contrast, users in Brazil and other select countries were shown pirated content, which even led to the app reaching number one on the free app charts in Brazil.

Apple still removed the app from the App Store.

The App Store’s team of more than 500 expert reviewers process more than 100,000 apps each week, but as the latest breach shows, relying on automated systems can sometimes lead to these apps slipping through the cracks.
