Listeriosis is a life-threatening bacterial infection in humans and animals caused by microorganisms of the genus Listeria, which originates from poorly processed meat. All those who became ill in the United States said they had eaten meat.
As the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported, such cases are rare in Russia due to regular preventive measures. The ministry’s statement noted that in 2023, about 120 thousand samples of meat and processed products were examined. Based on microbiological indicators, experts found that about 4% of the samples did not meet hygiene standards. In order to prevent the risk of complicating the epidemiological situation, by the end of 2023 alone, more than 84 tons of meat and meat products, 60% of which are food raw materials, were withdrawn from circulation.
“Thanks to systematically implemented sanitary and preventive measures in the Russian Federation, the incidence of listeriosis in recent years has remained at the level of isolated cases – 0.07 per 100 thousand population,” the statement said.
